Update: Military engages 60 BIFF men in Maguindanao

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 27): Update: Military engages 60 BIFF men in Maguindanao

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced that its units in Maguindanao have engaged an estimated 60 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) members in Barangay Iginagampong, Datu Unsay town Friday morning.

AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said the bandits were led by one "Cmdr. Bongos".

He added that the encounter took place around 8 a.m.

No casualties were reported, he added.

The encounter stemmed from BIFF attempts to occupy a part of Tacurong-Cotabato Highway and strafed passing military and civilian vehicles.

"Soldiers were sent to confront the bandits, triggering a three-hour running gun battle that lasted until past noon," Cabunoc said.

No casualties were recorded on both sides but the soldiers spotted enemy casualties being dragged by their companions as they fled towards the marshland.

The troops seized improvised bombs left by the bandits. Pursuit operations are on-going.
