"Loud explosion was heard near Jovini Solo convenient store along Manuel L. Quezon Street, Barangay Poblacion Pikit, North Cotabato," according to Captain Joan Petinglay, spokesperson of the military's 6th Infantry Division.

"Two unidentified personnel were dead on the spot who were riding one bajaj motorcycle. Allegedly said persons were carrying the said explosives," she added.

The explosion is not the first incident in the province this year. On January 18, a bomb attack hit a transmission tower also in Pikit town. The following day, another explosion rocked the public market of Kabacan.

It also happened while the security situation is tense in nearby Maguindanao province, where 44 Special Action Force (SAF) members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were killed in a "misencounter" with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The SAF troops were hunting down top Jemaah Islamiyah bombmaker Zulkifli Abdhir, better known as "Marwan." (READ: Dead or alive? Top terrorist was cops' target)
