Armed men torch 2 tractors, 2 Rio trucks in Negros Occidental

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 27): Armed men torch 2 tractors, 2 Rio trucks in Negros Occidental

About 15 armed men forcibly entered Uni-starch Incorporated in Hacienda Cabiguan, Barangay To-oy, Himamaylan City and torched two tractors and two Rio cargo trucks about 10 a.m. this morning (Tuesday).

Supt. Antonieto Canete, Himamaylan PNP chief, however, said he doubted the suspects are members of New People’s Army (NPA) operating in the area.

They torched the engines, seats, tires and other parts of tractors and cargo trucks.

Although the suspects introduced themselves as NPA, Canete noticed that based on testimonies of witnesses, not all of them were armed, and only with short firearms.

Canete added that he doubted they were members of NPA, knowing that the rebel group strikes either at night or at dawn.

Police are still validating the veracity of the burning by alleged members of NPA.

Canete learned that several workers have been complaining of unclaimed benefits and some of them were ordered evicted from the hacienda.

Uni-Starch Incorporated is owned by one Leonil Po.

Although the owner has yet to divulge the estimated worth of damage, Canete said it will not exceed P3 million.

Col. Jon Aying, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said he received reports of the torching and police operatives are now investigating the incident.
