With typhoon Ruby (international name 'Hagupit') expected to make a landfall in the weekend, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) on Thursday alerted all available aircraft and crew for possible disaster response missions that may be needed during the aftermath of the storm.
Lockheed C-130 "Hercules" cargo planes, Fokker
F-27 "Friendship" and W-3A "Sokol" and UH-IH
"Huey" II helicopters, communication vans with satellite phone,
rubber Boats, ambulance and engineering equipment are now being prepared for
this eventuality.
PAF chief Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Delgado also ordered the
accounting of personnel and completeness of equipment at the Grandstand of the
Villamor Air Base in Pasay
City .
Delgado said the PAF disaster response unit is composed of
search-and-rescue teams, aviation engineers, medical teams, communication,
security and support teams.
He said that Lockheed C-130 "Hercules" cargo
aircraft could serve as first responders in a large scale humanitarian
assistance and disaster (HADR) relief operations.
Other major Air Force bases in Clark, Mactan, Zamboanga and Palawan are also prepared as staging areas by the
disaster response teams.
