From Ang Malaya (Dec 14): NPA starts dumping heavy wepons

New People’s Army operating withing the jurisdiction of Eastern Mindanao Command are now dumping their heavy weapons because of insufficient ammunition. Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad said that 60th Infantry Battalion found number of armaments belonging to NPA after rebels who surrendered confessed the location where they bury the arms.

Among the recovered armaments were five 60 mm mortar tubes with accessories; three bi-pods, one base plate; two 81 mm rounds and 80 pieces of blasting caps.

“The the mortar tubes were buried by NPAs as they are off use to them, because they have no ammunition and especially that they are being pursued by troops,” Baladad said.

NPA rebels who choose to surrender are receiving cash grants, livelihood and other assistance under the Guns for Peace Program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
