From the Zamboanga Today (Sep 30): Defense Chief confirms joint operations vs ASG
Department of National Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin has confirmed a joint operation of forces in Sulu to fight the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf.
This amid reports of deployment of at approximately 1,000 troops in Western Mindanao comprising the Zamboanga-Basilan-Sulu corridor.
“Magiging Joint Operation ang area ng Sulu, dati rati, puro Marines, ngayon Army, Marines and Philippine Navy, MBLT 4,” said Gazmin during a press conference in Zamboanga City.
Gazmin said that the deployment of troops is in line with an earlier ultimatum to put a stop fo the terroristic activities of the Abu Sayyaf group.
For his part, Western Mindanao Commander Lt General Rustico Guerrero welcomed the additional deployment of troops to Mindanao saying that this was done to strengthen the military’s security profile in the region.
“Everything is for the improvement of our security environment for Western Mindanao so that is augmentation for our current forces here,” Guerrero explained.
Guerrero however refused to state specifically the number of troops deployed stating operational reasons.
Based on earlier reports, one military brigade has been dispatched to Sulu province with two other battalions deployed in other nearby areas.
