WESTERN Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief Lieutenant General Rustico Guerrero said the deployment of additional battalions of soldiers from Luzon to his command is a great help toward improving the security situation in the region.

Guerrero's statement came after the arrival of two battalions of Army forces.

The troops that were deployed to the area of responsibility of Westmincom are the Army's 41st and 21st Infantry Battalions coming from the 501st Infantry Brigade based in Gamu, Isabela.

"I cannot reveal the details (of deployment) but they are an augmentation to our current security forces in entire Western Mindanao," Guerrero added.

Guerrero's command has jurisdiction over the Western Mindanao areas to include the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte and Central Mindanao areas.

Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang earlier said that additional troops will be deployed to pursue the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu.

Catapang also led the distribution of the newly purchased rifles to the troops held at Camp Navarro that houses the Westmincom headquarters.
