Officials on Monday doubled up security forces in Isabela City, Basilan, a stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf group, where a bomb attack was foiled Sunday.
Richard Falcatan, manager of Basilan-based DXNO radio station, said the Basilan provincial peace and order council convened Monday morning to tackle security concerns including bomb attacks that have recently rocked the city of Lamitan, and the bombing attempt on Sunday in Isabela.
Falcatan said the council meeting had police and army officials discuss security measures including checkpoints on strategic places and the fielding of additional forces to secure commercial centers and crowded areas.
A police report said a “concerned citizen” called on Sunday to report the presence of a suspicious motorcycle parked along Roxas Avenue, where Army and police explosive experts retrieved a cooking pot containing an improvised explosive device (IED) on top of a parked Honda XRM motorcycle.
Police said the bomb experts used a water disruptor in disarming the IED at an isolated spot away from the crowd.
Police said the IED is made up of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (anfo), a mobile phone, a 9 bolt battery snap connector, solid wire two resistors and an improvised electric blasting cap.
The two bomb blasts in Lamitan City toppled power lines, and third was retrieved and disarmed.
