Despite the attack made by Syrian rebels against Filipino-held Position 68 at the Golan Heights, all soldiers manning the outpost are safe.

This was disclosed by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief Lt. Ramon Zagala Saturday afternoon.

"There was a firefight but I would like to assure everyone that our troops are safe at the moment," he added.

Zagala said that additional details will be given later.

He added that negotiations are still ongoing despite the firefight.

News of the attack at Position 68 was earlier confirmed by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin.

He added that Filipino peacekeepers in Position 69 were successfully extricated with Position 68 now under fire by Syrian rebels.

It now appears that the Filipino soldiers retaliated.

Gazmin said this took place 6 a.m. (Syrian time).

He also said that the morale of the Filipino soldiers in Position 68 are good.

Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights are concentrated in Positions 68 and 69.

The number of Filipino soldiers in Position 68 are 40 and those in Position 69 is placed at 35 or a total of 75.

The two outposts are four kilometers away from each other and are fortified.

The stand-off issue came to fore following refusal of the Filipino contingent to surrender their weapons to Syrian rebels who encircled their positions Thursday 10 a.m. (Syria time).
