One Filipino position in Golan Heights being fired at by Syrian rebels

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 30): One Filipino position in Golan Heights being fired at by Syrian rebels

Syrian rebels have fired at one of the positions sheltering Filipino peacekeepers involved in the now tense two-day stand-off at the Golan Heights.

This was confirmed by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin Saturday afternoon.

He added that Filipino peacekeepers in Position 69 has already been extricated even as Position 68 is now under under fire by Syrian rebels.

Gazmin said this took place 6 a.m. (Syrian time).

He did not give other details on whether the Filipino peacekeepers have taken casualties in the assault or whether the latter retaliated.

But Gazmin said that the morale of the Filipino soldiers in Position 68 are good.

Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights are concentrated in Positions 68 and 69.

The number of Filipino soldiers in Position 68 are 40 and those in Position 69 are placed at 35 or a total of 75.

The two outposts are four kilometers away from each other and are fortified.

The stand-off issued from refusal of the Filipino contingent to surrender their weapons to Syrian rebels who encircled their positions Thursday 10 a.m. (Syria time).
