Peace pact signing long overdue – solon

From the Visayan Daily Star (Jun 6): Peace pact signing long overdue – solon

Abang Lingkod Rep. Stephen Paduano said yesterday that the signing of a closure agreement to the peace talks between the government and the Rebolusyonaryong Partido ng Manggagawa-Pilipinas-Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (Tabara Paduano Group) has long been overdue.

Paduano, who used to be the national commander of the RPA-ABB, said he will meet Monday next week with Presidential Adviser on Peace Process Teresita Deles to inquire about the status of the closure agreement and hopes to get a clear view of it from her.

The RPM-RPA-ABB, a breakaway faction of the New People’s Army, entered into peace talks with the government in year 2000.

OPPAP Undersecretary Maria Cleofe Gettie Sandoval had said earlier that the draft closure agreement underwent a review by the Office of the President for appropriate action.

Sandoval said the delay in its approval was due to the “due diligence review”.

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon had earlier expressed dismay at the delay in the signing of the closure agreement.

The supporters of Paduano yesterday held a motorcade and a victory party in Bacolod City, for his proclamation as the newest member of the House of Representatives, after more than two years of battle with the Comelec.

Paduano said he was designated as a member of four House committees in Agrarian Reform, Planning and Urban Development, Natural Communities as well as Aqua and Fisheries.
