Ifugao villagers capture NPA fighter

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 6): Ifugao villagers capture NPA fighter

Tired of the incessant extortion and terrorism being done by the rebels, a New People's Army (NPA) fighter was captured by residents of Barangay Damag, Aguinaldo town, Ifugao Thursday morning.

This took place shortly after the 5: 30 a.m. encounter with NPA forces where troopers of the 54th Infantry Battalion succeeded in killing one rebel and wounding several others.

The captured rebel was identified as Jonathan Cudal.

Lt. Col. Eddie Pilapil, 54th Infantry Battalion commander, said that Cudal's father was also a member of the NPA movement.

He added that the latter was captured by residents and immediately handed over to his men.

Pilapil said that they had Cudal checked by doctors to ensure that he was not harmed by the civilians.

The captured rebel was immediately handed to Aguinaldo Municipal Police Station for filing of appropriate charges.

Prior to the incident, villagers tipped off the presence of the NPAs who are on extortion activities and collecting foodstuffs from the people.

“The civilians themselves told us about the presence of the NPAs in their barangay," the 54th Infantry Battalion commander stressed.

It can be recalled that the people of Sagada, Mountain Province searched for NPA camps in their place last month in order to dismantle them.

The search and destroy operation was the result of the consensus reached by the people to affirm Sagada’s declaration as a “Peace Zone”.

Sagada’s economy was affected by the NPA activities especially the tourism sector as tourists arrival is declining because of peace and order situation concerns.

According to the locals of Sagada, the search and destroy operations of NPA camps will continue on a regular basis to prevent the rebels from entering their town again.
