The Philippine National Police (PNP) awarded 15 policemen and women for their “courage and gallantry” in defending the President Roxas municipal police station from alleged New People’s Army (NPA) members.

PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima himself went to Mindanao on Wednesday, May 28, to lead the awarding rites at the Camp Quintin Merecido in Davao City.

On May 20, over 100 suspected members of the NPA attacked the police station of the town of President Roxas in Cotabato.

A close quarter firefight ensued, resulting in the death of 5 alleged NPA members and an undetermined number of wounded. “[The NPA members] underestimated the readiness and dedication to duty of the outnumbered government forces,” said Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas in a previous statement.

The following were awarded the Medal of Bravery (Medalya ng Katapangan):

  • Police Officer 3 Julius C. Dagpin
  • Police Officer 3 Michael Angelo B. Cariño
  • Police Officer 3 Rafael O. Carbon
  • Police Officer 2 Dennis A. Soledad
  • Police Officer 1 Raymund Niño P. Nuevo
  • Police Officer 1 Razel S. Genzola
  • Police Officer 1 Job Franklin D. Santos
  • Police Officer 1 Johnny Boy K. Lomotos
  • Police Officer 1 Roy Angelo B. Rasonabe

Rubio, who was wounded during the encounter, will also receive the PNP Wounded Medal (Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting) from the PNP Regional Office 12.

Purisima also led the turnover of a KIA 4x4 troop carrier, assault rifles and ammunition, as well as financial support for the police station.
