2 Reds killed in Samar clash

From Tempo (May 28): 2 Reds killed in Samar clash

Government forces killed two communist insurgents as fresh skirmishes broke out between soldiers and members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Samar province.

This brings to 13 the number of NPAs killed in span of one week in separate military operations throughout the country.

Capt. Amado Gutierrez, spokesman for the Army’s 8th Infantry Division (8ID), said the latest encounter occurred around Monday at about 5:30 p.m. in Barangay Mahayag, Matuguinao town, Samar.

Gutierrez said troops from the Army’s 43rdIB were conducting peace and security operations in the area when they engaged a group of NPA insurgents.

The operation was launched in response to reports on the presence of armed rebels in the said barangay.

According to the 8ID spokesman, the troops were fired upon by the insurgents, prompting them to return fire.

After the firefight, government forces found the bodies of two NPA rebels. But Gutierrez said that based on accounts by villagers, the NPA suffered more casualties.
