Two paramilitary forces were killed while an Army sergeant was severely wounded in a 20-minute firefight with communist guerrillas in Agusan del Sur, a report reaching here said on Wednesday.

Capt. Christian Uy, spokesperson of the Army’s Public Affairs Division here, said that the paramilitary forces were on patrol when they encountered about 30 fully armed rebels of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the hinterland village of Guadalupe in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, on Monday.

Uy said that the military has not released the names of the militiamen who were killed and the identities of the four wounded civilians.

However, Uy said that Sgt. Danilo Alamban, the squad leader of the two regular members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU), was airlifted to the army’s sub-station hospital in Bancasi, Butuan City while the civilians were treated in another hospital.

He said that Alamban’s team proceeded to the village in Guadalupe in Esperanza to follow up a report of the presence of the NPAs in the area.

Uy said that the military as deployed a team which, until Wednesday, has been in hot pursuit of the fleeing NPA rebels.
