AFP: MNLF suffers add'l casualties in Zambo standoff

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 27): AFP: MNLF suffers add'l casualties in Zambo standoff

The Moro National Liberation Front rebels have suffered additional casualties in the standoff that entered the 19th day Friday in this city, a military official said.

Armed Forces’ Public Affairs Officer Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said that 15 MNLF rebels were killed when firefight erupted Thursday evening “in the areas of operation.”

The areas of operation include the adjoining barangays of Sta. Catalina, Sta. Barbara and Rio Hondo.

Zagala said Thursday evening’s firefight erupted when a group of MNLF rebels tried to breach the areas of operation.

Zagala said that another firefight erupted around noontime Friday but he still don’t have a copy of the after encounter report.

Zagala said the clearing operations continue in a bid to clear the area of operation of MNLF rebels.

“We want to be able to remove pockets of resistance within the areas of operation,” he said.

“We are finishing the small pockets of engagement against this MNLF Misuari faction,” he added.

He said so far that 186 MNLF rebels were captured and 52 have surrendered since the start of standoff last September 9.

He said the troops have also confiscated 172 firearms from the rebels.

So far, Zagala said that 23 government forces--18 soldiers and 5 policemen--were killed and 180 others--166 soldiers and 14 policemen--were wounded.
