From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 8): Troops recover 20 improvised bombs, clash with Abu Sayyaf

Government forces have recovered more than 20 improvised bombs when they raided a lair of an Abu Sayyaf leader in the hinterlands of Al-Barka town in this province, a military official disclosed Thursday.

Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade commander Col. Carlito Galvez said the improvised bombs were recovered when the troops swooped down the lair of Abu Sayyaf leader Nurhassan Jamiri around 4 a.m. Wednesday in Sitio Bohe Libi, Barangay Macalang, Al-Barka town.

The military received intelligence report that the improvised bombs are to be used by the Abu Sayyaf bandits in bomb attacks in several areas in the region to include this city.

The other reported targets of the bombings are: Isabela City, Basilan; Zamboanga City; Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur; and Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Galvez disclosed that a soldier was killed while eight others were wounded in the firefight that broke out when the raided Jamiri’s hideout.

He disclosed the troops launched pursuit operation against the bandits the fled to different directions.
