From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 8): Soldier killed, 7 ASG men wounded in Basilan clash

A soldier was killed while seven Abu Sayyaf Group bandits were wounded as Army troops clashed with the brigands in Sitio Bohe Libi, Macalang, Al-barka, Basilan early morning Thursday.

Col. Carlito Galvez, 104th Infantry Brigade commander, said his men were conducting security and clearing operations in the area following reports the ASG were planning to conduct improvised explosive device attacks and other harassment tactics against security forces based in Isabela and Zamboanga.

He added the firefight started around 4 a.m. and lasted until 10 a.m.

Galvez said one soldier was killed while three other troops were wounded.

He added they are still evaluating reports that seven ASG men were wounded in the six-hour long encounter.

The bandits were reportedly led by Isnilon Hapilon and Furuji Indama.

Pursuit operations are ongoing.
