From Rappler (Aug 8): Army seizes explosives in Basilan
The military raided the house of a slain Abu Sayyaf leader in Albarka, Basilan early Thursday, August 8, and seized 30 pieces of improvised explosive device (IED).
Col Carlito Galvez, commander of the Army's 104th brigade in Basilan, said the explosives were intended for planned attacks in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Zibugay, Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur, as well as Isabela and Lamitan in Basilan. He was citing intelligence reports.
The same reports said members of the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have joined forces in a blockade in Albarka, according to Galvez.
Only last Tuesday, August 6, Army troops and ASG members were caught in a gun battle that killed one soldier and wounded 3 others.
The Thursday raid was conducted following reports of planned terrorist attacks in Mindanao. On Wednesday, August 7, armed men bombed 3 areas in central Mindanao.
One explosion in Maguindanao wounded 7 Army soldiers; the Bangsamoro Islamic Liberation Front (BIFF) claimed responsibility for the attack.
Even Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is considering canceling the annual Kadayawan festival due to reports of planned attacks in the region.
