The intensified anti-insurgency campaign of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) through the various units of the 8th Infantry Division (8ID) was able to gather 68 rebels to return to the fold of law this first semester of 2013.
Capt. Amado Guttierez, spokesperson of the 8ID said that the surrenderors were a mixture of members of the New People’s Army (NPA), organized group and unit militia-armed civilian sympathizers.
The biggest group surrender so far for this year was that of 38 NPA barangay organizing party members and 15 militia unit members at the 20th Infantry Battalion in
Earlier, an NPA couple, Lemuel and Nida Moreno, both holding high positions in the rebel movement, also gave up their armed struggle to return to the mainstream society.
Under the AFP Guns for Peace program, rebels who surrender in exchange for their firearms are entitled to livelihood assistance and cash incentives that they can use as they try to rebuild their lives.
This incentive does not include those that are provided by the local government unit (LGU) and concerned government agencies that are part of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
