6 NPAs, 1 militiaman killed, one hurt as rebels attack detachment in Agusan Del Sur

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 19): 6 NPAs, 1 militiaman killed, one hurt as rebels attack detachment in Agusan Del Sur

Six rebels and one militiaman were reported killed while one was wounded after 40 New People's Army (NPA) fighters attacked a detachment in Barangay Banag-Banag, Sibagat town, Agusan Del Sur Friday morning.

Lt. Col. Leo Bongosia, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the rebel assault on the detachment took place around 5 a.m.

According to Bongosia, 48 militiamen stationed at the detachment managed to stand their ground and repel the successive NPA attacks, killing six of the rebels.

During the series of attacks, militiaman Elan Vincolado was killed while his companion Edwin M. Cempron was wounded.

At one point, two MG-520 attack helicopters were able to fly and provide support fire to the militiamen, causing an undetermined number of casualties among the rebel force.

The 4th Infantry Division spokesperson also said that the government forces in Barangay Banag-Banag were not surprised by the rebel assault as they have been receiving information about NPA movements from intelligence and civilian sources.

Bongosia said that the attack aims to eliminate the militia detachment in the area so that the NPAs can conduct their extortion activities unmolested.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing.
