1 killed, P9-M equipment burned by NPA in Aurora

From the Daily Tribune (Nov 24): 1 killed, P9-M equipment burned by NPA in Aurora

A civilian was killed while a policeman and two other civilians were wounded while P9-million worth of heavy equipment went up in smoke after communist New People’s Army (NPA) attacked a construction site in Aurora province yesterday. Lt. Tala Servidad, spokesman of the Army’s 7th Infantry Division (ID), said that an undetermined number of heavily armed NPA rebels burned down a backhoe and a dump truck owned by Palacios Constructions near Sitio Dimani, Barangay Villa in Ma. Aurora town at around 9 a.m. Combined elements of the Army’s 48th Infantry Battalion (IB) and local police responded to the arson incident but were ambushed by the NPA band. “The NPAs were reportedly extorting money from the construction company,” Servidad said. Palacios Constructions is contracted by the government to build a road network that will connect Metro Manila to Aurora province. “The backhoe and dump truck (cost) P9 million,” said Servidad. Brig. Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang, commanding general of the 7th ID, immediately ordered pursuit operations against the NPA band as he condemned the attack. “We condemn this terroristic attack against a construction company. This tragic incident came when peace and development in Central Luzon (have returned),” said Catapang.
