75 ASG surrenderees now part of mainstream society
ZAMBOANGA CITY — About 75 members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) had already surrendered to soldiers of the Joint Task Force Sulu (JTF-S) since January this year and turned over 47 high-powered firearms and 13 low-powered firearms.
JTF-S Commander Maj. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio said yesterday six more ASG voluntarily surrendered to the 1103rd Infantry Brigade in Barangay Bonbon, Patikul Sulu who were followers of the different group leaders and senior group leaders of the ASG operating in Sulu.
"The six ASG returnees brought with them three M1 Garand rifles, one M79 Grenade, and one M203 ammunition. The surrendered firearms are now under the custody of the 1103rd Infantry Brigade for proper disposition,” Patrimonio added.
The surrender of the six ASG members is a clear indication that most of them already know the true plan of the government to win the peace in the province of Sulu,” Patrimonio theorized.
He said “let us, therefore, sustain the gains and maintain the momentum to finally end terrorism and encourage the remaining ASG terrorist to lay down their firearms, be with their families, avail of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, and live peacefully. The JTF-S commander said.
According to 1103rd Infantry Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Benjamin Batara Jr., the good collaborative efforts of the Municipal Task Force in Ending Local Armed Conflict of Patikul with the military and the community were responsible for convincing the ASG members to surrender and avail the government’s program.
Residents of Sulu lauded the commitment of the troops of 6th Special Forces Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Rafael Caido, 45th Infantry Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Vicente Mabborang Jr., and other military units for their efforts in assisting the ASG members in their surrender.
The local populace was also commended for their sincerity in supporting the government’s campaign to end the local armed conflict in Sulu by providing precise information on the whereabouts of the ASG terrorist presence.
