The relentless combat operations of the Philippine Army led to separate encounters on Maundy Thursday in Negros Island that claimed the lives of two suspected leaders of the New People’s Army and yielded a cache of firearms and explosives.

Lt. Col. Roderick Salayo, 11th Infantry Battalion commander, reported that his troops encountered about 12 NPA rebels, remnants of the dismantled South East Front of the Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros/Cebu/Bohol/Siquijor (KR-NCBS), at Sitio Tulong in Brgy. Enrique Villanueva in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

Salayo said that 15 minutes of gun battle led to the death of Jonard Salo, with aliases of Lino, Rapid and Nikko, who was left behind by his fleeing comrades at the encounter site, where Army soldiers recovered a M16 rifle, a M14 rifle, a KG-9 rifle, a homemade 12 gauge shotgun with 10 ammunition, five improvised anti-personnel mines, three rifle grenades, four M203 grenade launcher ammunition, 2 NPA flags, among other war materials, 12 backpacks containing assorted ammunition, personal belongings and subversive documents.

Another squad leader of the NPA also died in separate encounter with 94th Infantry Battalion soldiers in Brgy. Caradio-an, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, identified the slain rebel through his alias as Johnny, a squad leader of the Sentro De Grabidad Platoon of Central Negros (Front)2 of KR-NCBS.

Recovered from the encounter site were two magazines of .45 caliber pistol, a hand grenade, a Huawei tablet gadget, medical kit, and a back pack containing personal belongings.


Lt. Col. Van Donald Almonte, 94IB commander, disclosed that NPA rebels in central Negros are continuously weakening through the continuous setbacks from encounters and surrender of their members.

Almonte added that their remaining cadres are competing against each other for the position of left behind by Elbert Quillano, alias Carding, deputy secretary of CN2, KR-NCBS, and his wife, Jessa, who also died on April 1 in an encounter with 94IB troopers in Sitio Kulihaw, Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City.

He claimed that the NPA remnants operating in the area is now divided, as they are betraying each other to occupy the position of Quillano.
