The military on Tuesday discovered a New People’s Army (NPA) hideout where the rebels had been assembling anti-personnel mines in Barangay Dungeg, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan, after conducting airstrikes against the insurgents.

Maj. Jekyll Dulawan, 5th Infantry Division (5ID) spokesperson, told the Philippine News Agency that an initial report said troops on reconnaisance patrol encountered some 40 NPA members, which resulted in a running gunbattle and airstrikes by the military.

Close air and fire support were done to protect soldiers from counter fires and anti-personnel mines allegedly put up by rebels, he said.

No fatalities were reported on the military side but the rebels may have suffered injuries, Dulawan said.

The discovered hideout and explosive manufacturing site belongs to rebels under the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley.
