CAMP CAPINPIN, Tanay, Rizal – Five former rebels with firearms surrendered to AFP-PNP forces, few days before NPA commemorate its anniversary of hampering the country’s development, in a three separate peace negotiations in Region 4A over the week.

Per reports, alias Gio and alias Patrick who were members of the NPA group operating in the hinterlands of Quezon, yielded to the government forces on March 25 in Brgy Salipsip, Polilio, Quezon bringing with them one cal.45 pistol with magazine, a cal.38 revolver, and one hand grenade.

Subsequently, alias JM, another member of the same NPA group, surrendered himself with an M16 rifle to the troops in Brgy J. Santiago in Sta Maria, Laguna on the same day.

Meanwhile, alias Dexter and alias Joan, also remnants of NPA group in boundaries of Rizal and Laguna, voluntarily surrendered to the AFP-PNP. They also surrendered one M1 carbine, a magazine, and ammunition at Brgy Pinugay in Baras, Rizal after a series of localized peace efforts in the area.

During an interview, alias JM said that the hardships they endured as rebels and the complete disregard to their welfare made them realize to abandon armed struggle, wishing to be like their former comrades who surrendered to the government and have returned to their normal lives peacefully.

BGen Rommel K Tello, Acting Commander of 2ID, welcomed this move of the rebels to return to the folds of the law in hopes of a brighter future with their families.

“Your wise decision to abandon armed struggle marks a new beginning for you and your loved ones. With your help, we shall build a better and safer country for our families and fellowmen while we ensure that you are secured from any terrorist’s acts of retaliation.”

“This milestone is proof of the CPP-NPA’s defeat as more of their combatants realize there is no future in sight being part of the terrorist groups whose goals are only to exploit, destroy families, and hamper our potential to move forward as a nation.”

The 2ID already made necessary steps for the surrenderers including debriefing and medical check up with health professionals prior their subsequent enrollment to government’s program wherein they can receive up to Php700,000 in grants and benefits to help them and their families start their lives anew.
