Posted to Kalinaw News (Nov 28, 2020): Court convicts Tiamzon Couple for Kidnapping, Serious Illegal Detention
The court convicted Wilma and Benito Tiamzon for the charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention, November 27. The court found the couple guilty beyond reasonable doubt for the said cases.
The decision was released after 32 years of waiting by the Army officers whom the Tiamzon couple kidnapped and detained in June of 1988. They were identified as Army Lieutenants Clarito Santos, Oscar Singson, Rommel Salamanca, and Abraham Claro Casis and Sgt John Jacob of the Philippine Narcotics Command in Quezon province.
In January 2018, Manila court ordered the couple’s arrest after finding “no reason to further allow their temporary liberty.”
It may be recalled that the couple was arrested for the same charges on March 22, 2014, which was heavily criticized by the organizations related to CNN. One website affiliated with the leftist group, deemed their arrest ”a kick in the bucket of peace” and as illegal. An influx of support came from Karapatan members during their detention at the CIDG Detention Cell, in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
In 2016, the couple was granted temporary pardon following participation to the peace talks on that year, between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), being peace consultants for NDF.
The couple participated in the 2nd round of peace talks that transpired in Oslo, Norway, October 2016. A few weeks after the negotiations, both returned to the Philippines, June 2017, and was warned of, however, by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte of the possibility of their rearrest.
In 2019, President Duterte officially declared CNN a terrorist organization, halting any possible future negotiations on peace talks with the CNN group. Eventually, the National Task Force on Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) was crafted to non-violently address the 52 years of armed conflict by providing Communist Terrorists who surrendered, the assistance through social services, technical education and monetary rewards while integrating them back to mainstream of the society.
