Sagay City, Negros Occidental – A total of 170 villagers participated in a Peace Advocacy Symposium initiated by the Army’s 79th Infantry (Masaligan) Battalion on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Brgy XI (Gawahon), Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

The symposium was successfully conducted with the support and active participation of the Local Government Unit of Victorias City represented by Dr. Samson E. Garson Jr, City Agriculturist; Barangay Council of Gawahon headed by Hon. Rogelio Barnuevo, Brgy Captain; Hon. Warlito Undar of Brgy V; Mr. Ariel Miranda, Senior Agrarian Reform Program Technologist; representatives from 6SAB PNP-SAF led by P/Capt Renato Monreal II, Commanding Officer, 64SAC PNP-SAF; and Victorias CPS represented by P/Lt Ephremi R. Udani.

Lectures and audio visual presentations regarding insurgency, infiltration efforts of the CPP-NPA-NDF and its recruitment schemes were presented to the local populace to give awareness and empower them to be productive and well-informed members of the society.

@Joross, a former rebel, also shared his tragic experience in the hands of the armed group, being an insurgent for years, how he was recruited by the communist group, until he decided to surrender.

The activity was highlighted with the ceremonial signing of Brgy Resolution declaring the CPP-NPA and its political wing, the National Democratic Front (NDF), as Persona Non Grata in their community.

After the activity, the Masaligan troopers together with the Barangay Council of Gawahon facilitated the distribution of food packs to the local populace.

Educational leaflets on the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and Anti-Terrorism Law (ATL) were also given to the populace.

Barangay Captain Barnuevo expressed his gratitude to the Philippine Army initiating the activity and reminded the residents of Gawahon to help the government in protecting their community against the CPP-NPA.

“Let us not allow this terrorist group to infiltrate our community. Now is the time for us to unite. Let us work together to end local communist armed conflict,” said Brgy Capt. Barnuevo.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Gerard Alvaran, Commanding Officer of 79IB said, “Prevention is better than cure that is why we initiated to have this symposium to inform the residents and make them aware of the danger of terrorist’ deceptions and propaganda.”

He appealed to the residents of Brgy Gawahon not to fall for the deceptive scheme of the communist terrorists.

“Do not be deceived by the communist NPA terrorists. They will only poison your minds to develop hatred against the government through their systematic schemes. Instead, let us unite and work together to win over any threat that hinders peace and progress in our communities, and achieve an insurgency-free and peaceful society,” Alvaran added.
