COTABATO CITY, June 24 (PIA) –The 6th Infantry Kampilan Division of the Philippine Army applauded the efforts of the Local Government Unit of South Upi, Maguindanao in bringing members of the New People’s Army (NPA) to return the fold of the law.
This, as three members of the West Daguma Front of the NPA yielded to authorities and surrendered two M16 rifles, one caliber 45 pistol, and one improvised explosive device.
In a ceremony on Tuesday, 6ID and Joint Task Force Central (JTFC) commander Major General Diosdado Carreon emphasized that ending local insurgency does not solely rely on the security forces but also on the local government units.
“Good governance will effectively address the ills of the root causes of insurgency,” Carreon said commending the LGU of South Upi for supporting the national government in its fight against insurgency.
He also announced that the surrenderees will be given financial support, legal assistance, and livelihood as part of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) of the government.
Also, the former rebels received an initial cash assistance from LGU-South Upi.
Identified in their aliases as Jok, Tamtam, and Michael, the surrenderees said that they have decided to restart to live normal lives because they are tired, exhausted, and were convinced of the sincerity of the government in helping former rebels to have a fresh start.
