Combined elements of the 97th and 42nd Infantry Battalions engaged in an armed confrontation with members of the New People's Army in Zamboanga del Norte.
At 6am, May 4, 2020, operating troops while conducting security patrol encountered more or less 40 members of HQ Kalaw and Mindanao Regional Guerilla Unit of Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee in Sitio Balukangon, Barangay Pange, Siayan, ZDN.
Firefight lasted for 45 minutes after which enemies scampered to different directions.
"Our troops are pursuing the fleeing communist terrorists to prevent them from victimizing innocent people for their own personal gain," said Col. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade.
While clearing the encounter site, troops recovered one M60 Machine Gun; Barrel; three Improvised Explosive Devices; two AK47 magazines; 289 rounds 7.62mm ammunition; one Medical Kit; two boxes of assorted medicines; two Bandoliers; one Electronic Multi-Tester; personal belongings; and subversive documents.
"The successes of our unit are attributed to the well-rounded brigade and battalion commanders, stalwart soldiers, and supportive stakeholders and citizens in our area of operation," said Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, Joint Task Force ZamPeLan commander.
No casualty was reported on the government side while on the enemy side, it is yet to be determined.
"Our enemies are taking advantage of the situation that our country is currently facing, hence, we are exhausting all efforts to thwart their terror plots," said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, WestMinCom commander.
"Rest assured that your WestMinCom troops will continue to launch deliberate operations in terrorist-infested areas to clear the communities from threat," Lt. Gen. Sobejana added.
