Soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion (IB) have discovered another hideout of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the remote village of Buenavista in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Lt. Col. Angelo Guzman, commander of 94IB, said on Tuesday that his men found the lair in Sitio Mabunga, the third in the barangay, on Sunday after a two-week combat clearing operation.

Guzman said the area, which can accommodate about 100 persons, is possibly being used for training of recruits.

The hideout has three security outposts, makeshift classrooms, formation area, assigned battle positions, and other improvised training facilities, as well as a kitchen and barracks.

During the clearing, the soldiers also found a solar panel, training materials, and some documents.

On May 13, troops discovered an NPA hideout in Sitio Bunsad, where they seized an improvised explosive device and ammunition for AK-47 assault rifle.

The other lair was found in Sitio Lower Olitao on May 23, a day after the 94IB soldiers clashed with about 10 communist rebels also in the same village.

Col. Inocencio Pasaporte, commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, said the communist-terrorists frequent Barangay Buenavista based on the presence of their hideouts in the village.

“(It) is detrimental to the progress of the barangay and of Himamaylan City as a whole,” Pasaporte added.

In August last year, a soldier was killed while two other officers were wounded in a clash with communist rebels also in Barangay Buenavista.

In the same village, six NPA members were arrested in joint police and military operations in June last year.
