Lt. Gen. Erickson Gloria on Tuesday relinquished his post as deputy chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to take over the Puerto Princesa, Palawan-based Western Command (Wescom).
Gloria will replace Vice Admiral Rene Medina who will retire from the service on Thursday.
Meanwhile, taking over his post in acting and concurrent capacity is AFP Inspector General, Lt. Gen. Antonio Ramon Lim.
AFP Chief-of-Staff, Gen. Felimon Santos Jr., presided over the change-of-chief of office ceremony in Camp Aguinaldo.
"As the chief executor and adviser on matters pertaining to policy formulation and implementation, and command decision-making process through completed staff actions, the (Office of the Deputy Chief-of-Staff AFP) plays a very important role in overseeing and ensuring that the different staff and services are working harmoniously towards the direction set by the AFP leadership,” Santos said.
Gloria previously served as deputy chief of staff for personnel, J-1; wing commander of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing; deputy commander of the Air Mobility Command; and deputy commander of the Air Logistic Command.
He was also designated as squadron commander of the 5051st Search and Rescue Squadron based in Palawan and 5053rd Search and Rescue Squadron in General Santos City; and commander of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing.
Gloria is a tactical and rescue pilot and holds a command pilot rating in the Philippine Air Force. Early in his military career, he was awarded different aircrew qualifications that ranged from being a pilot, element lead, flight commander, test pilot, to instructor pilot for the UH-1H and Bell 205 helicopters.
He also qualified as a pilot of the Sikorsky S-76A. He logged more than 2,500 accident-free flight hours and was awarded the Command Pilot Badge for his feat.
"Congratulations Erick on your new assignment as the new commander of Western Command! Palawan will be your new responsibility but GHQ will always be your home and OTDCSAFP (Office of the Deputy Chief-of-Staff of the AFP) will always be your family," Santos said.
Medina, Gloria's predecessor at Wescom, will retire after 38 years of serving in the military.
Before taking over Wescom in March 2019, Medina served as commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, the Philippine Navy's largest operating force and recipient of the prestigious award as Naval Operating Forces of the Year 2018.
Medina is an accomplished and experienced naval commander, with command tours in four Philippine Navy vessels -- the BRP Leopoldo Regis (PG-847), BRP Apollo Tiano (PG-851), BRP Salvador Abcede (PG-114), and BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS-37).
