Navy records 42 suspect Covid-19 cases from ranks, dependents

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 15, 2020): Navy records 42 suspect Covid-19 cases from ranks, dependents (By Priam Nepomuceno)

MANILA – The Philippine Navy (PN) has recorded 42 suspect cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) from among its ranks and dependents.

"The 42 (suspect) cases are all under quarantine because they manifest symptoms and they are not yet tested. Our medical teams are monitoring their health conditions," PN public affairs office chief, Lt. Commander Maria Christina Roxas, said in a message in Filipino on Wednesday.

Roxas said they also have 17 probable cases awaiting test results.

"They are awaiting (the) results of Covid-19 tests from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center. They are also under quarantine," she added.

According to the Department of Health, a “suspected” Covid-19 patient shows symptoms of the disease, has traveled to or lives in a place where there has been a confirmed local transmission of the disease, or had close contact with a confirmed or probable patient.

The category covers persons 60 years and above, women with a high-risk pregnancy, people who have pre-existing health conditions, and health workers who show symptoms of the disease.

On the other hand, a “probable” Covid-19 patient is a suspect patient who has not been tested or is awaiting the test results, as well as one who has been tested in an unofficial testing laboratory.

A "confirmed" Covid-19 patient has tested positive for the disease.

Meanwhile, Roxas said the presidential yacht BRP Ang Pangulo, which was converted into a floating patient care center (PCC), has yet to take in any suspect or confirmed Covid-19 case.

The ship, which is docked at the Sasa Wharf in Davao City, was declared operational as a floating PCC last April 12.

The BRP Ang Pangulo was converted into a medical facility to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak on orders of President Rodrigo Duterte last April 3.
