GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Police investigators are looking at several angles in the killing of a barangay councilor here who was shot to death by motorcycle-riding assailants on Tuesday afternoon.
Maj. Tirso Pascual Jr., chief of the Police Station 6, said Barangay Baluan councilor Omar Mamalumpong, 40, was traversing the Amao Road in Barangay Bula on a motorcycle past 4 p.m. when he was waylaid by at least two gunmen.
Pascual said the victim just came from his home in Purok Shariff Mocsin, Baluan and was returning to a seminar in a hotel in Barangay San Isidro when the incident happened.
Mamalumpong reportedly died on-the-spot due to six gunshot wounds on the body from a caliber .45 handgun.
Citing accounts from witnesses, Pascual said the suspects appeared to have been tailing the victim prior to the shooting.
“It’s possible that the gunmen had other companions that acted as lookouts,” he told reporters.
The police official said they are investigating several angles for the killing, one of which was the victim’s work as barangay councilor.
Mamalumpong, who was laid to rest Wednesday morning based on Islamic tradition, was the chairperson of Barangay Baluan’s committee on peace and order, and had assisted the city police’s anti-criminality campaigns in his area.
Armando Diamante, the Baluan barangay chairperson, said the victim had not reported any death threat prior to the incident.
“This is a huge loss for our barangay,” Diamante said, adding they are hoping for speedy justice in Mamalumpong's death.
Mayor Ronnel Rivera condemned the incident and directed the city police to resolve the case immediately.
He also recommended the creation of a special task group that would lead the investigation and manhunt against the suspects.
