DAVAO CITY – The city government commemorated the 17th-year anniversary of the Sasa Airport bombing on Tuesday, remembering the victims of the horrific incident that claimed the lives of 22 people.
Mayor Sara Duterte, who led the ceremony, said the March 4, 2003 bombing that also wounded dozens of individuals continues to evoke "painful memory" among the victims' families.
“For some of you, this is the site of the incident that has forever changed the lives of your families. We are not here to remember what happened but to remember the lives of your loved ones and honor their memory,” Duterte said.
Recalling the previous bomb attacks that hit the city in recent years, Mayor Sara said the violence has only served to make Dabawenyos "stronger and braver after each incident".
“The city government of Davao, together with our security forces, remains vigilant and committed to protecting the city from all forms of terrorism,” she said.
The mayor also underscored the role of residents in maintaining peace and order, saying simple obedience of the law and precautionary measures enforced by security forces goes a long way to keep the city safe.
She also assured that the city government will continue to give educational assistance to the children of the victims.
Based on the city government records, at least 32 children of bombing victims have already graduated from college while 12 are still continuing their studies.
“In our collective conviction that as long as we remain committed to the ideals of peace and hope, nothing can weaken our resolve and our resilience as one Dabawenyo community,” Duterte said.
