BORONGAN CITY, March 16 (PIA)—Farmers from Barangay from Pandol, Boco and Balagon will be producing corn, abaca and banana.

This is according to OPAS Chief Virgilio Capon in an interview at PIA Hour aired on Friday, March 13.

The three barangays are identified as conflict barangays as classified by security forces owing to their distance from the town proper of Can-avid.

The three barangays can be reached through the Can-avid River for 3-5 hours mechanized boat ride upstream

The provincial agriculturist immersed in the communities for a few days and learned their planting needs.

Capon was a member of the Retooled Community Support Program (RCSP composed of personnel from the LGU Can-avid and LGU-Eastern Samar).

"There are but a few rice fields in these areas, corn is more suitable in the sloping areas, especially near the river banks," said Capon.

The agriculturist also learned that the villages can grow abaca and banana.

"Abaca is typhoon resilient, even if storms uproot them, they can still be utilized," he added.

Capon said that he already sent some corn seeds and fertilizers to Can-avid.

He said that the office has a tissue culture laboratory which can supply abaca and banana suckers to the areas mentioned.

"We will transform the three baragays into a corn demo farm with all the inputs and proper care so that the locals will know that it can be done," said Capon.

The province and the municipality of Can-avid give focus to the three barangays in relation to EO 70 or Task Force End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC).

On February 25, the TF ELCAC sailed back to the most distant barangay Balagon to solicit the social needs of the barangay.

Other concerns that agencies are trying to address are, lack of secondary school, lack of livelihood opportunities, lack of health facilities and other infrastructure. (nbq/PIA 8-E. Samar)
