The Philippine Army is eyeing to dismantle two of the nine remaining guerrilla fronts of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Samar Island within two months, a top official said on Monday.

Maj. Gen. Pio Diñoso III, commander of the Philippine Army 8th Infantry Division, said in a phone interview Monday
the days for the two NPA fronts in Samar are now numbered as part of their bid to free Samar Island from the communist insurgency.

“Two fronts are about to fall in two months. We have the right formula and the support of ELCAC (end the local communist armed conflict) members to make this happen,” Diñoso told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The region, he said, has only nine guerrilla fronts with about 500 members and all operating in three Samar provinces.

In Samar province, the communist terrorist group has been recruiting youth fighters, conduct extortion activities, collect solicitations in the guise of helping marginalized people, and launching treacherous attacks against government forces by detonating landmines.

On March 11, two NPA fighters and a soldier were killed in a clash in a remote village in Pinabacdao, Samar. The military patrolled the area acting on reports from residents about the activities of rebels near their village.

The NPA has 103 influenced villages and 174 threatened villages in three Samar provinces. About 27 of these areas have been included in the retooled community service program (CSP) in the past few months, Diñoso reported.

The CSP deployments aim to facilitate the government’s development programs by hearing issues and concerns of vulnerable villagers and bring them to the attention of concerned government offices.

Last year, government forces disbanded two fronts in Leyte province, prompting 262 fighters and close allies to surrender.

President Rodrigo Duterte led the distribution of benefits to former rebels on Jan. 23, 2020.

Leyte Island, which consists of Leyte, Biliran, and Southern Leyte provinces, is now classified as insurgency-free.

“The number of NPA operating in Leyte is squad size only with five to seven fighters that can be handled by our policemen,” Diñoso added.

He is upbeat of ending the insurgency problem soon in all areas in Eastern Visayas with ELCAC.

Eastern Visayas has 1,073 organized task forces comprised of the regional task force, six in provinces, seven in cities, 127 in towns, and 932 in villages.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) -NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
