Philippine Army (PA) commander, Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay lauded troops for the recent series of successful operations against the New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

“Your sustained efforts to end the insurgency against these lawless groups play a critical part in the attainment of our mission. With your adept demonstration of leadership, teamwork, and dedication to the service,"
Gapay said in a statement Monday.

Gapay was referring to the recent operations of the Tanay-based 2nd Infantry Division, Capiz-headquartered 3rd Infantry Division, the 10th Infantry Division which operates in the Compostela Valley and the 11th Infantry Division which has operational jurisdiction in Sulu, against the rebels.

The operations from February 24 to March 1 resulted in a total of nine engagements against the communist rebels and seized from them 22 assorted firearms.


Reports said four NPA members were killed while 18 others surrendered.

Gapay said on February 29, soldiers of 47th Infantry Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division nabbed Marcelo Maldos, a political instructor of the Bohol Party Committee, Komite Rehiyon-Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor, who was responsible for promoting anti-government teachings and propaganda among communities in Bohol province.
