ILOILO CITY, Feb. 17 (PIA) – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa said the government is ready to accept members of the New People’s Army (NPA) should they decide to surrender and return to the folds of law.

“Bakit hindi pa kasi kayo bumaba. It’s a different government, nandito kami (Why not just come down. It’s a different government, we are here),” he said during his visit to the Police Regional Office (PRO)-6, last Saturday.

The nation’s top cop made the statement following the death of Captain Efren Espanto Jr., team leader of the Reconnaissance Company of the Western Visayas Regional Mobile Force Battalion.

Espanto was killed during an encounter with members of the NPA last week.

He said if communist rebels go down and surrender their firearms, there are livelihood and housing offered by the government.

“At pwede kayong bumalik sa ordinaryong pamumuhay rather than ganito maglaban laban tayo kapwa Pilipino (And all of you can go back to your ordinary lives rather than having us, fellow Filipinos, fight each other),” Gamboa said.

There are also proposals to have these communist rebels commissioned to the armed forces as members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU).

Gamboa paid his respects to the fallen cop during Espanto’s wake at PRO-6, last Saturday.

Espanto’s immediate family received financial assistance and government benefits from the PNP, National Police Commission, Comprehensive Social Benefit Program, and the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund, Inc. (PSMBFI).

The Civil Service Commission also gave a posthumous award/citation (Pamanang Parangal sa Lingkod Bayan) to Espanto. (LTP/CBA/PIA-6)
