From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 4, 2020): Westmimcom to continue offensive vs. terrorists (By Salvador Santiago)
ZAMBOANGA CITY - Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, has ordered the troops to continuously pursue the foreign and local terrorists in its area of operations.
Maj. Arvin John Encinas, Westmincom spokesperson, said Saturday Sobejana’s directive is to pursue and neutralize the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits in Basilan and Sulu even if martial law in Mindanao has ended.
The Westmincom troops are also continuously pursuing the Dawlah Islamiya (DI) in Lanao del Sur and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Central Mindanao.
Encinas said the troops have so far arrested 84 ASG bandits while some 300 ASG bandits have surrendered last year.
He said the troops will continue its mission to pursue the remaining members of the ASG, including some foreign terrorists, who managed to sneak into the country and joined the ASG.
“We have not stopped our operations even during the holiday season. Now we have the entire year to get rid of the terrorists,” he said.
He said the soldiers have sacrificed their lives to achieve peace by eliminating the ASG bandits and other lawless groups, like the DI and BIFF.
