DAVAO CITY -- The Philippine Army’s 71st Infantry Battalion (71IB) has continued its effort in helping underprivileged children from geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas by treating them with a fun-filled day at the mall and tour of a nearby park.
According to 2Lt. Kim Carlos, 71IB Civil Military Operations officer, they conducted "Lakbay Bata 2019", a convergence program, with the help of different government agencies, municipal and barangay local government units.
He said some 300 children and parents belonging to the least privileged families from the outskirt sitios of Barangays Anitapan, Golden Valley, Cabuyoan, Cadunan and Libudon, all of Mabini town in Compostela Valley Province, participated in the activity held in a mall in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Friday (November 22).
“It is an annual activity and it is in line with the celebration of the 27th National Children’s Month which highlights the role of children in nation-building and promotes their moral, social and spiritual well-being,” Carlos added.
Lt. Col. Esteveyn Ducusin, commander of the 71IB, said the activity aimed at providing happiness to poor children and widen their perspective in life.
He added participants were given a simple tour of Robinsons Place and Energy Park in Tagum City.
“Various stakeholders gave gifts to children and parents while mascots and Clown the Magician entertained the participants,” he said.
During the activity, a representative of the Mabini Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSWDO) lectured about children's rights and welfare while another from the Department of Agriculture in Region 11 (DA 11) demonstrated on how to grow the seeds given to them earlier and promote home-based gardening.
“The 71IB will continue to initiate similar activities and spearhead to converge and synergize efforts of different stakeholders as a whole of nation approach in providing basic services for the welfare of the children”, Ducusin said.
