A total of 60 youth leaders in Western Visayas completed the three-day Regional Youth Leadership Summit (RYLS) organized by the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) at Camp Peralta, Jamindan, Capiz on Sunday.
Maj. Gen. Dinoh Dolina, 3ID commander, emphasized the role of the youth in society and nation-building.
“The Filipino youth are considered as the most valuable resource. If the government would invest in something, there is nowhere to invest better other than the youth,” he said in a statement.
Anchored on the theme “Youth of today, leaders of tomorrow,” the summit sought to empower the youth through a leadership training; instill the spirit of patriotism, nationalism and social responsibility; expand their role in nation-building; and grow the next generation of leaders in the community.
Dolina asked the participants to reflect on their contributions to nation-building, reminding them of what the country's national hero had said: "The youth is the hope of the motherland. As the next generation of leaders, the future of the nation lies in your hands”.
“Ako nga ba ang pag-asa ng bayan na sinasabi ni Gat Jose Rizal? (Am I the hope of the motherland Gat Jose Rizal is referring to?),” Dolina asked, leaving the challenge to the youth to reflect with themselves.
Participants were thankful for their formed camaraderie, leadership and teamwork through the training.
They also brought with them the knowledge they earned from Richard Sevilla of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) who discussed the integral role of the youth in their respective communities; Mary Chris Medina from the Department of Labor and Employment who introduced potential livelihood training for the youth; Stephen Bediones from the Provincial Planning and Development Office-Capiz who tackled project proposal development; and former rebels "Ate Glen" and "Lab-lab" who shared their insights and experiences when they were in the armed movement.
YLS is a program that the Philippine Army and other peace-oriented advocates introduced to protect the youth against the recruitment of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).
In a press conference on Saturday, Dolina said aside from the YLS, the training and seminars of the Army also extend to schools.
“We are more aggressive in our awareness efforts in schools. We receive more and more letters from schools, asking us for briefing about communists' deceptive recruitment of students,” he said.
He said the Army and the Department of Education, among others, work together to assure that schools will be free from the recruitment activities of the rebels.
“There are other efforts being conducted by the higher level. Together with DepEd (Department of Education), we will be conducting action to make sure to end rebels’ activities in schools,” he said.
