Two members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) decided to go back to the fold of the law to live normal lives with their families, an Army official said Monday.
The two rebels, one of whom is a ranking leader, have "grown disillusioned" on the promises of the communist rebel movement, said 1Lt. Jonald Romorosa, the civil-military operations officer of the Army's 36th Infantry Battalion.
In a statement on Monday, Romorosa identified the NPA leader as Jessie Amboc Iligan and his colleague Lemuel Parker Daging.
Iligan and Daging turned themselves in to authorities on Friday (October 11) at the headquarters of the 36th IB in Barangay Dayoan, Tago, Surigao del Sur.
Romorosa said Iligan, a member of the Manobo tribe, turned over a Garand and a Carbine rifle.
Romorosa said Iligan served as the vice squad leader of Squad 1, Sandatahang Yunit Propaganda (SYP) of Platoon 1 of Guerilla Front 30 under the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC) of the NPA.
“The said personalities voluntarily surrendered because of the hardship they have experienced inside the communist movement and the realization of the lost cause that the CPP-NPA is fighting for,” Romorosa said.
He said the surrender of the two rebels was made possible through the concerted efforts of tribal leaders, rebel returnees, and the military.
Lt. Col. Jezreel Diagmel, acting commander of 36th IB, partly attributed the surrender to the "relentless military combat operations" of government forces in the area.
The NPA surrenderers, Diagmel said, have “learned the genuine offer of the government towards achieving peace and development”.
He also urged the remaining NPA rebels in the area to “surrender and lay down your arms, return to the folds of the law and live a normal and productive life”.
Romorosa said Iligan and Daging are now being enrolled to the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, an all-inclusive package of benefits that former rebels can avail from the government, including livelihood, medical, education, housing, and legal assistance.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
