From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 7, 2019): Widows of soldiers slain in Basilan get cash aid
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) released on Friday some PHP5.4 million in livelihood assistance to the widows of 18 soldiers killed in action in Basilan province three years ago.
DSWD Secretary Rolando Joselito Bautista, who led the distribution of the livelihood aid, said the beneficiaries were the widows of the troops of the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion, who died in a clash with the Abu Sayyaf bandits on April 9, 2016.
The battalion was under the then 104th Infantry Brigade--renamed this year the as 101st Infantry Brigade--when Bautista was its commanding officer.
DSWD regional director Nestor Ramos told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that each of the beneficiaries received PHP300,000 in cash assistance to start their own business.
Ramos said the businesses identified by the beneficiaries included liquefied petroleum gas and rice dealership, mini grocery, convenience store, eatery, boarding house, apartment, poultry, buy and sell, among others.
Ramos said the funds for the financial aid came from the national government through the Presidential Management Staff.
