ZAMBOANGA CITY – A total of 19 high-powered loose firearms with ammunition were turned over to the military by the municipal government of Munai, Lanao del Norte, an official said Saturday.

Lt. Col. Bernardo Taqueban, Army’s 4th Mechanized Infantry Battalion commander, said the firearms were turned over to his command in a ceremony 10 a.m. Friday at the town hall of Munai.

The loose firearms included a cal. 50 Barrett, an M14 sniper rifle, 11 M-16 “baby Armalite” rifles, two carbines, and four Garand rifles.

“The successful surrender was the result of concerted effort and intensified collaboration among local government units, stakeholders and our forces,” Taqueban said.

Col. Facundo Palafox, the newly installed commander of the Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, witnessed the ceremonial turned-over of the loose firearms.

“The support of the local government units in our area of operation to our campaign against loose firearms manifests their desire for lasting peace and prosperity in the province,” Palafox said.

“We encourage not only the local government units but also other stakeholders especially the local populace of Lanao del Norte, to trust and support our campaign against loose firearms for us to be able to attain a peaceful and secured province towards its faster development,” Palafox added.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Roberto Ancan, commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan (the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces), commended the troops and the local government unit of Munai for the convergence of efforts, which led to the successful hand over of the loose firearms.

“Your 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, in collaboration with the LGUs and other stakeholders, remains steadfast in its commitment to attain just and lasting peace in our area of operation thru our campaign against loose firearms,” Ancan said.
