LILOAN, Cebu – Around 2,000 residents of this northern Cebu town on Sunday received various services provided in a medical and civic action mission of Army reservists in partnership with the municipal government here.

Brig. Gen. Erik Miguel Espina, brigade commander of the 1901st Infantry Brigade Ready Reserve, said reservist- doctors from his unit headed by Master Sgt. Manny Barcenas provided free minor surgeries to 15 patients from Catarman and its neighboring villages in this town.

Reservist doctors from the 5th Technical and Administrative Service (TAS) Brigade (Dumaguete group), its attached units such as 501st TAS and 505th TAS, headed by Lt. Col. Angelo Arias and Maj. Kenneth Coo, also joined the free medical check-up for some 1,400 townsfolk.

The 5th TAS is a unit supervised by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Reserve Command, with membership from different professions, such as doctors, nurses, dentists, judges and lawyers, professors, priests and nuns, among others.

According to Espina, reservist doctors and nurses from Dumaguete traveled early Sunday morning just to reach Catarman for the medical mission.

Mayor Ma. Esperanza Christina Frasco and her husband, Cebu 5th District Representative Duke Frasco, thanked the reservists for choosing Catarman for the medical mission.

The lawmaker vowed to assist in future medical missions by providing free medicines.

The activity started with a field mass celebrated by Capt. Brian Butanas, a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco and in charge of a boys' home in Balamban, Cebu that provides technical and vocation skills training to out-of-school youth.

2Lt Gertrude Roldan, a nun from the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) assisted Fr. Butanas in the mass and in giving counseling to villagers. Roldan was commissioned to the AFP reserve before she entered the congregation.

The Salesian priest heard confession from the residents, who also availed of free legal and notarial services from reservist lawyers headed by Capt. Jose Marie Gochangco of 5th TAS.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas assisted the reservist-dentists in providing free tooth extraction to more than 300 people. It deployed an air-conditioned dental van where various services were performed.

Also, the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas conducted a free lecture on urban gardening and distribution of seedlings of fruit-bearing plants to around 100 residents.

Young Army reservists assisted call center agents from Qualfon company in a storybook reading activity, parlor games, and distribution of hygiene kits worth PHP71 each to 200 children and 30 mothers.

On the other hand, the 701st Cebu Ready Reserve Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Antonio Esmero and 702nd Bohol Ready Reserve Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Lino Garsuta provided free massage therapy and free hair cut to close to 500 residents.

Reservists from the 5th Naval Group Reserve and Naval Reserve Center Eastern Visayas prepared three giant pots of porridge for the residents.

Two private companies, the Funai Electric Cebu Inc., and Oriental Port and Allied Services Corp. gave free medicines in addition to those donated from the personal fund of Mayor Frasco.

Col. Jerry Borja, chief of Task Group Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor, who brought with him troops to secure the vicinity of Catarman Integrated School, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that medical missions conducted by the reservists have helped so much in the AFP’s mission of winning the hearts and minds of the people.

“Through the services rendered by uniformed reservists, the people feel that there is a government that is taking care of them. They are reservists but they function as forefront of the entire AFP in providing services to the people,” Borja said.
