In the third encounter of 62IB in Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City, this year, soldiers also killed at least three communist rebels, while several others had been seen injured by government troopers in more than 30 minutes of fierce gunbattle at a distance of about 20 meters, Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said yesterday.
The identity of the slain Army soldier, who succumbed to a gunshot wound in the chest, and those of the two injured troopers, however, were withheld, pending notification of their families.
One of the soldiers was hit in the left arm, while another sustained an injury in the left leg.
Arevalo said that 62IB soldiers responded to reports from civilians on the presence of armed rebels, who were consolidating their forces in the area. While assaulting the rebel position, he also said that soldiers engaged in a gunbattle at a short distance.
The incident was the 12th encounter of the 303rd Infantry Brigade this year under the command of Arevalo, with a single casualty.
Arevalo said that the fleeing rebels also exploded an improvised landmine along their withdrawal route to discourage Army soldiers from pursuing them.
Recovered from the encounter site were empty shells assorted firearms and components of improvised anti-personnel landmines.
