Military: Zero violence in Paquibato in a year

From the Sun Star-Davao (Aug 7, 2019): Military: Zero violence in Paquibato in a year

A MILITARY official said that it has been over a year since there was no reported violence in Paquibato District, Davao City, which used to be the hotbed of communist rebels in previous years.

Speaking during yesterday’s press forum at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, 16th Infantry Battalion commander Rey Pasco said the continuous collaboration of various stakeholders has largely contributed in the improvement of peace condition in the area.

He said that there is a huge difference in terms of security landscape before and now because of the social programs and infrastructure projects that are implemented such as farm to market road from Calinan to Malabog up to Kapalong then Bukidnon.

Pasco said that there are many investors who intend to invest in Paquibato but the Peace 911 is assessing what appropriate business should be put up in the area. This is expected to spur economic development and give employment to the people living in Paquibato.

The Peace 911, a localized peace and development initiative program of the Davao City Government, has been one of the breakthroughs in addressing the root causes of why insurgency thrives in the area.

“Dako kaayog tabang because after Peace 911 in 9 month time, ang Paquibato na clear from CNN (Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army, and the National Democratic Front) influence. It was declared daghan surrenderees, daghan tag trainings and basic services,” he said.

Peace 911 had just celebrated its first anniversary and Pasco said that in just a year, there were already significant improvements seen in the area. What they are targeting now is to highlight the tourist spots in the district.
