The municipality of Calatrava in Negros Occidental has declared the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) persona non grata and condemned the unlawful activities of the communist-terrorist group.
Municipal officials led by Mayor Marilyn Era held a ceremonial declaration during the town’s flag-raising ceremony on Monday, in the presence of officers of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police.
In a statement on Tuesday, Lt. Col. Emelito Thaddeus Logan, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion (IB), who attended the ceremony, commended the officials and residents of Calatrava for their sincere support to the government’s anti-insurgency campaign.
Era thanked the 79IB for their assistance to the municipality. “We, the local officials, are doing our best to find solutions to the people’s problems, and provide livelihood programs and development projects for the good of the barangays,” the mayor said in a statement.
The mayor also asked for cooperation from her constituents and show concern for their hometown to achieve peace and progress.
The Municipal Council of Calatrava passed Resolution No. 2019-095 on July 8, stating that the northern Negros town “adheres to the principles of peace and order as an indispensable element to the development and progress of the municipality and thus, condemns any unlawful activities of the CPP-NPA as it threatens the economic, social and political stability of the municipality and its people.”
During the ceremony, a symbolic copy of the resolution was mounted on a frame and signed by the town, army and police officials. Logan received a copy of the resolution from the town mayor.
The activity was part of the two-day Human Dimension/Peace Building Seminar, which started on Sunday, attended by almost 150 former supporters of the CPP-NPA from the town’s nine villages, and 179 residents of the neighboring Toboso town at the evacuation center of Calatrava.
The seminar was organized by the 79IB with the police, municipal government, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Department of Agrarian Reform.
Calatrava is the fourth local government unit in the first district of Negros Occidental to declare the CPP-NPA persona non grata.
The City Council of San Carlos passed a similar resolution on May 30, denouncing the atrocities perpetrated by the CPP-NPA in the country.
Toboso also declared the CPP-NPA persona non-grata in Resolution No. 044, Series of 2019 passed by the Municipal Council on June 25.
On June 21, Escalante City declared the CPP-NPA persona non grata and denounced the terror group’s atrocities as stated in the City Council’s Resolution 2019-050.
The CPP-NPA, which has marked 50 years of armed struggle, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
