From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 21, 2019): 2 cops hurt in Masbate ambush
Two policemen were hurt in an ambush staged by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Pio V. Corpuz town in Masbate province on Wednesday morning, a police report said.
In an interview, Maj. Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office (PRO-5) spokesperson, identified the wounded as Patrolmen Dexter Navarro and Jamerick Manongsong, both members of the Philippine National Police in the said town.
She said the victims, on board a police mobile patrol car with other policemen, were responding to a call about a shooting incident.
While negotiating a road in Barangay Alegria at around 8:45 a.m., an anti-personnel mine believed planted by NPA rebels, exploded, hitting the policemen's vehicle.
The explosion was followed by a series of gunfire that hit the lawmen.
Other policemen on board the patrol car were able to fire back at the rebels, prompting the enemies to flee.
The NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
